Principal Hernán D. Vera has been appointed to the Los Angeles County Superior Court bench. On November 13, Governor Gavin Articlesom announced the appointment of 19 California Superior Court judges, with Vera among the ten appointed for Los Angeles County.

“It is an immense honor to have this opportunity to serve the people of California, and to join the talented and committed bench officers of Los Angeles County,” said Vera. “I will miss my wonderful colleagues at Bird Marella. They are all superb lawyers, but their dedication to doing the right thing is what makes the firm a very special place.”

A widely recognized and experienced civil litigator, Vera specializes in class actions and consumer law, and prior to joining Bird Marella, served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Public Counsel, the nation’s largest pro bono law firm. In addition to his appointment to the Superior Court bench, Vera was appointed to the Board of Directors of the State Justice Institute by President Obama in 2009, the Board of Trustees of the State Bar of California by the California Supreme Court in 2013, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission in 2016.

“Hernán’s wealth of experience and leadership has made him a strong asset to Bird Marella and its clients,” stated Managing Principal Paul Chan. “While bittersweet Articles for the firm, we are incredibly proud of his appointment to the bench and confident he will thrive in his new role given his unrelenting commitment to justice, integrity, and fairness. The California judicial system is fortunate to gain such an excellent new jurist.”
