Monday, December 11, 2017

Bird Marella principal Ariel A. Neuman was interviewed by Law360 regarding the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act (SESTA), a new law aiming to make it easier for law enforcement to sue websites that host sex-trafficking ads. The article addresses concerns of the legislation threatening online free speech and potentially forcing smaller business to close due to potential litigation.

Prior to joining Bird Marella, Mr. Neuman served as an assistant US attorney in the major frauds and violent-organized crime sections. He commented, “It’s a laudable goal, but I don’t know that this is the right solution. This could affect any place where users post content online, not just the big companies that have an army of lawyers that they can consult. The small website operators who are trying to run something they think is a community service could be caught up in something that was created by someone else.”
